Very quick post since I was busy with the orientation today.
During the program we are taking part in the lantern making festival/competition and we visited a museum to see some works which got a prize in the past.
It was very inspiring and I was stimulated.

AIR - day 3
I have been having a dilemma for these few years that I tend to label my practice if it is Art, Illustration or Design, even though I know that categorizing is nonsense.
Things can be seen in various ways by different people and a story can be changed easily by different story tellers. This is probably why I am interested in shadow because it can be disappeared, distorted or doubled depending on the lighting. People are the one created categories, thus the boundary between things is vague or there is no border in actuality.
I have been experimenting with washi for a couple days to know the texture by ripping, scrubbing, putting water on etc. I can see that the fibers tangle to compose a sheet of paper and it reminds me that things are complex relating with different elements and linking to other issues endlessly. I hope I can develop the research into artworks utilizing organic aspects of Japanese paper.

AIR _ day 2
Although I am afraid to quote this beautiful writing by Hiroshi Sugimoto with my poor translation, I think it is worth to try out as it was so inspiring for me to think about how paper can work with light/darkness.
"Daylight is tamed and filtered inside of a Japanese tearoom, thus intermediate condition between light and darkness is able to be created. The paper used for Shouji (paper screens) blocks the scenery outside, but it does not cut off the sense of its presence, for example the atmosphere of cloud cutting the sun light or breeze running through a tea garden. Once the outlook is covered with the thin paper, it will even ensure the sense of presence.

AIR _ day 1
I have been invited to the artist in residence (AIR) in Mino where is one of the most famous paper making village in Japan. I am staying there from today for three months with three other artists coming from Netherlands, Vietnam and Germany. This year had about 50 candidates applied. Alongside working on own project, we will learn the traditional paper making and lantern making for inspiration and introducing the Japanese paper-"washi" into our artworks.
I hope that I will update my work on progress here almost every day to share what I'm thinking, doing and possibly struggling!

Mock Commemorative Stamp
The city hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics will be announced in a few days. Tokyo is a candidate city as well as Istanbul and Madrid. While there are many campaigns around here related with this, I was invited to contribute my work to 100days countdown event. Many people in creative joined and 14 illustrators were given different sports to design a commemorative stamp. (The stamp is mock though, of course!)
Although my initial idea was to use stamp itself as a green football field, I featured just 2 players with Tokyo skyscrapers background. This work will be exhibited amongst many others in the Tokyo headquarters building from 4th September.

Client:Kodansha Ltd.
AD: Kohtaro Hori
Photography : Kenichirou Fujimoto
Artwork : Hiroko Matsushita
I was commissioned to create art work for promotional posters of Japanese women's magazine,
which linked up with cosmetics.
I made 7 different paper cut illustrations.
Over 30 posters were printed and displayed for one week in Omotesando Station in Tokyo.

22nd February -
22nd February was the date I flew over to the UK to start my artistic career
and it was the biggest turning point in my life.
So in a way yesterday was my 4th birthday as an artist.
It became my annual ritual on that date to look back what I have done so far and
think about what I want/aim to do in the next coming 365 days.
Now I am lucky enough to work in a creative studio my previous colleague established last year.
It is a spatial design/engineering company as well as a workshop which has some technical equipments.
Can't wait to experiment and develop my work there.
Thanks all.

My drawing of the view from the studio.
