AIR - day 49

長良川おんぱく（温泉泊覧会）のイベントに参加してきました。

里唄（筏唄、作業唄、わらべ唄など）を歌い継ぐ、井上博斗さんに率いられ、

要所をまわりながら、その土地にまつわる唄を聴くというもの。

I joined a tour walking Suhara area where is 15 mins away from Mino by car.

This tour is guided by Hiroto Inoue who is a young folk singer researching about

local folklore and Japanese traditional performance art. 

The genre of the song is called "Sato-uta" (village-song) that everyone sang in their everyday life.

He guided historical places and sang some folk-songs related with the places.

 洲原神社からスタート。

Started from Suhara Shrine.

長良川では昔、木材を筏に組んで名古屋方面へ運んでいたそうです。

筏を操る時に歌われていた筏唄。

In the past they lumbered in mountains and made a raft of timbers in order to transport to bigger cities.

This is a song raftsmen sang on the raft. 

山道を歩いて六角堂へ。

On the way to Rokkaku-dou (six-sided temple)

 

長良川沿いに歩いて立花方面へ。

Walking alongside of the Nagara river towards Tachibana area.

1910年建設の長良川水力発電所。近代化産業遺産／有形文化財になっています。

A hydroelectric power station built in 1910. 

Designed as a modern industrial heritage and an important cultural asset.

 

紙漉き職人の加納武さんの幸草紙工房にてツアー終了。

以前、工房を拝見させて頂いたのですが、本当に綺麗な紙を漉かれる職人さんです。

End of the tour at Saegusagami-Koubou, a paper making workshop run by Takeshi Kano.

I have visited his workshop before and was so impressed with the quality of his beautiful paper. 

とても面白いツアーでした。

また同じルートをいつかゆっくりまわってみたいです。

I really enjoyed the tour and would love to walk the same route again sometimes.

AIR - day 47

I have completed the piece of my work which explores the idea of dividing and a correlation between negative space and positive space. The cutout I created divides the paper in half, right and left, while they are still delicately connected with the fine lines. Furthermore the act of making holes on the paper connects the front space and the back of the paper. It also leeds the notion of "here and there" when it is hanged.

Whenever I cut paper it goes over the English terms "negative and positive space" in my mind, although I cannot find right words paraphrased in Japanese. Seeing negative space means seeing positive space, and vice versa. The positive space creates shadow when it's lit, while negative space is filled with light. The front and the back, light and shadow, positive and negative space.... They seem to be opposite each other, but they are like two sides of the same coin. 

“隔てる・分ける” ということ、そして空間におけるネガティブ／ポジティブということを模索して制作していたものが一段落しました。紙の中心をカットしていく行為は、一枚の紙を右と左に分けつつも、細い線によって左右を脆く繋げています。また、切り抜かれた穴は紙の前後をつなぎ、吊り下げることにより空間を隔て、こちら側とあちら側という概念を生み出します。

紙を切る時はいつでも英語の"negative"と"positive"という言葉が私の頭に浮かびます。切り抜かれた方がネガティブ、残っているほうがポジティブです。ネガティブを見るということはポジティブを見るということであり、その逆も然り。光を通すと、ネガティブなスペースは光で満たされ、ポジティブな面は影になります。表と裏、光と影、ポジティブとネガティブ。相反するものでありつつも、表裏一体な関係性というところに面白さを感じます。

Workshop with 4th graders in Makitani elementary school.

They traced a body figure onto a cardboard with a method, either lying down on the paper or casting shadow on. They then collaged with paper and other materials reflecting character and personality of the model. 

This is the 3rd workshop for us during this artist in residency program. It is not only fun but also very inspiring for me as children are full of open imagination. And of course, they are so adorable!!! 

牧谷小学校4年生とのワークショップ。
紙の上に寝転んだり、影をつかって人型をとり、そのモデルの生徒の心象風景をコラージュするというものを行いました。
今回はレジデンス中、3回目のワークショップになるのですが、子ども達は想像力の固まり。本当に楽しく、そしてモノの見方をオープンにする刺激になります。そしてなんといっても、小学生は本当にかわいい！
